COMPETITION DAY

From arrival to end of day prizes, learn about what to expect and the order of events of a typical competition day.
JUMP TO SECTION
Schedule
Most competition days follow a similar schedule:
-
All participants are to arrive in the morning and compete in the first session for their division (8-10 races). Often, one division is run at a time, but riders are encouraged to arrive well before their division begins.
-
Morning sessions are followed by a lunch break.
-
Finals sessions of 10–12 races for each division follow lunch.
-
The Finals are followed by prizes. Some competitions are two-day events with a very similar schedule both days, and most riders will camp and stall their ponies on-site for two-day competitions.

Clothing & Gear
-
Most riders compete in a sports jersey that ideally matches their partner’s.
-
Riders can compete in any type of breeches. Most riders choose flexible riding tights that are black, but other colours are allowed.
-
Paddock boots and a certified riding helmet are required.
-
Riding gloves are not required.
-
One rider in each pair needs a helmet band to signify the last rider of the pair to ride the race. A 2” wide hair band that will stretch around a helmet will work. EMGC also has coloured helmet bands available.
Volunteering & Props Crew
All riders must organize a volunteer for their props crew (two volunteers per Pair).
Volunteers do not need to be seasoned pros at setting up races. We all help each other set-up, but it is recommended volunteers keep the race set-up instructions handy.
On-field Coaching / Handling
-
Riders may be coached on the field as long as the coach also has a current Ontario Equestrian membership.
-
The coach must stay behind the start/finish line.
-
Handlers for the Lead Line division must also have an OE membership and can stay with their pony at all times while they are on the games field.
Trailering & Planning Ahead
-
EMGC competitions sometimes offer stalls on-site, but often require the ponies to be tied to their trailer while not being ridden. Practicing leaving your pony tied with and without others around it will help give them a positive experience at the competition.
-
Ponies should also come with their own water to promote good drinking throughout the day.
-
Competition venues do not provide hay and often do not provide shavings for stalls (if available).
End of the Day
Please stay near the field at the end of the day to be presented with your prize and get a photo-op.
